CHLORDANE SUPERFUND SITE REMEDIATION
Location: Central Illinois
Client: Major Chemical Company
Contract Amount:$3,200,000

Chlordane Sludge Stream Superfund Site Remediation
CHLORDANE SUPERFUND PROBLEM:
Chlordane fugitive dust and leachates from a major chlordane manufacturing facility in Central Illinois contaminated a 3-mile stream segment that also contained historical municipal sludge deposits from a local wastewater treatment plant. This created a gelatinous low viscosity matrix that could not be removed using conventional methods.
A five foot wide by 3.1 mile long chlordane/sludge deposit was initially estimated by the Chemical company. Clogged culverts in farm field access roads caused contamination to migrate up stream banks that greatly increased inpacted soil estimates. Remtech's principals conducted pilot tests and prepared a site remediation plan that was approved by the State of Illinois.
CHLORDANE REMEDIATION SOLUTION:
Pozzolanic Portland Cement fixation dewatered the gelatinous matrix that allowed excavation with Gradalls and Priestman excavators with 60 ft reaches. Over 20,000 tons of sludges were dewatered and dried on stream banks (that served as inclined dewatering beds). Dried residues were loaded into over 1,000 dump trucks for disposal at a State designated hazardous waste disposal site.
Pozzolanic Chemical fixation was conducted in 1,000 ft sections by constructing containment dams and diverting stormwater around each segment with 6" centrifugal pumps and PVC piping. This prevented flooding of town facilities. Stormwater passed through a large detention pond where it was clarified and filtered through mobile diatomaceous filters for discharge downstream.
Chlordane remediation performance sampling was conducted that met State cleanup standards.
