Project Case History

Accelerated Enzyme Mainline Track Bioremediation

Client: Norfolk Southern

Contract Amount for both Projects is confidential.

Case 1 Location: Southeastern U.S.

An Amtrak passenger train stuck a vehicle at the Amwiller Intersection. The sight glass on the main fuel tank was ruptured and an estimated 750 gallons of diesel fuel was released over 0.35 miles of track before the train came to a stop.

Remtech was called on an emergency basis to stop the leak from the fuel tank and treat contaminated rail ballast over the 0.35 mile stretch of main line track with HC-2000.

HC-2000 was applied from a high-rail equipped truck supplied by Norfolk Southern. Native microbial heterotrophic plate counts were elevated from 14,000,000 CFUs/gram to 1,00,000,000 CFUs/gram following three (3) days of treatment.

A solar powered water/enzyme application system will be used to treat the last 100 feet of track before the train came to a stop where the highest diesel concentrations were recorded. This system will operate without interfering with train traffic. Six (6) air injection sparge points will be installed to maintain aerobic conditions during the nine (9) week degradation process.

Case 2 Location: Dallas, Georgia

A Locomotive caught fire on a Norfolk Southern's mainline track near Dallas, Georgia. An estimated 100 gallons of diesel fuel were released along a 100 foot section of track.

No power or water were available near this site. Remtech designed and installed a solar/battery powered mist system to supply oxygen and water to the matrix. The ballast served as a biological trickling filter. HC-2000 and AgZyme were applied during the first three days of treatment followed by weekly HC-2000 applications to accelerate the native fungi and bacteria biodegradation process.

Treatment will continue for a nine (9) week period or until TPH concentrations fall below 250 mg/kg. During the first seven weeks of treatment, TPH concentrations were reduced from 13,500 mg/kg to less than 620 mg/kg. Heterotrophic plate counts increased from 41,000,000 to over 680,000,000 CFU's/gm of soil. Supplementary air sparge tips were driven into the ballast to increase oxygen levels. A battery driven compressor was utilized to supply air through the sparge tips.
