Project Case History
Gasoline Tanker Explosion Response
Client: Major Tank Line Location: Central, Georgia
A Tanker carrying 7,800 gallons of unleaded gasoline overturned, struck a power pole, and exploded in Central Georgia. The tanker landed upside down in a drainage ditch and exploded lifting it eight feet in the air landing on the ground with the top hatches parallel to the ground. The fire burned for 3 hours until an airport crash truck arrived to extinguished the fire with foam. An earthen containment dam was constructed around the burning tanker to prevent leachates from entering a nearby stream. Remtech applied FFFP foam to the tanker liquids as a vapor suppressant. Remtech employed explosion proof tools to penetrate the tanker shell to off load 3,000 gallons of fuel from the tanker carcass. 3,000 pounds of ice were injected into the tanker's core fluids to drop temperatures from 180 deg F to less than 90 deg F to facilitate pumping operations. Test pits were constructed to collect leachates from the fire and intercept fuel around a PVC water line. An environmental assessment is being conducted to evaluate alternate site remediation technologies.
